Treatments for Spider Veins

Treatments include Stockings, lifestyle Changes and Sclerotherapy

TREATMENTS FOR SPIDER VEINS

The method of treatment largely depends on the severity of your spider veins. Following are the most common methods:

COMPRESSION STOCKINGS FOR MILD SYMPTOMS

The mode of treatment of spider veins can vary depending on the severity of the condition. It could be as simple as pulling on compression stockings to relieve pain and improve circulation.

LIFESTYLE CHANGES

Lifestyle changes can also help relieve the symptoms of spider veins. For example, a diet low in salt may help reduce water retention and reduce swelling. Propping your legs up frequently can also help. Taking frequent breaks from long periods of sitting or standing up is also recommended.

SCLEROTHERAPY

If simple remedies don’t show signs of improvement, simple medical procedures like Sclerotherapy (pronounced sklair-o-THAIR-uh-pee) can often wipe out 80% of treated veins. This procedure has been used since the 1930s to treat varicose and spider veins. This is a minimally invasive procedure, often performed in the doctor’s office in which the physician injects a specific liquid or foam solution, known as sclerosing agents, into damaged veins, causing the treated vein to seal shut and fade from view over time. The treated blood vessel (vein) is then naturally resorbed by the body. This procedure often results in significant reduction in the appearance of spider veins. The sclerotherapy process can also reduce pain or side effects caused by damaged veins.

Depending on the size of the damaged veins, sclerotherapy can be used to treat varicose and spider veins in the following areas:

  • thighs
  • calves
  • ankles
  • feet
  • face (frequently the sides of the nose)

Typically, this procedure can take anywhere from 15 minutes to an hour, depending on the severity of the vein condition.

There is little to no downtime associated with sclerotherapy. You’ll most likely be able to return to your everyday activities immediately. Dr. Tamboli has performed hundreds of these procedures and can answer your questions.
